All About Linen

Kahane on the Parsha
Rabbi Meir Kahane – Parshat Tetzveh
ALL ABOUT LINEN

"You shall embroider the coat of fine linen (shesh), and you shall make the turban of fine linen (shesh), and you shall make the belt of needlework" (Exodus 28:39).

Linen garments are also called vad: "The Kohen shall put on his linen (vad) garment and put his linen (vad) breeches upon his flesh" (Leviticus 6:10).

Linen is actually something of a "theme" surrounding those who minister to G-d. The Kohen gadol on Yom Kippur was required to "gird himself with a linen sash and bind his head with a linen turban--these are the holy garments" (Leviticus 16:4). When David danced before the ark, he "had upon him a robe of linen" (I Chronicles 15:27). And a young Samuel "ministered before the L-rd...girded with a linen robe" (I Samuel 2:18).

It seems that linen garments were worn by people who isolated (badad) themselves in the Temple and served G-d. Thus, the Metzudat David comments on King David dancing in a linen robe: "The linen robe was akin to the robe of the Kohen gadol and was reserved for those who isolated themselves in the service of G-d."

Shesh (which means both linen and six) and vad (which means linen and whose numerical value is six) evoke the six days of creation, during which G-d--alone (levad) and set apart (badad)--created the world. Vad means single and alone, as Rashi explains in his commentary to Exodus 30:34.

The linen in the Temple--whether called vad or shesh--reminds us that G-d created the universe and directs it and that only in Him may we place our trust. Behold, is there a greater symbol of this truth than Joseph, who miraculously stood before Pharaoh after spending 12 years in prison and was subsequently dressed in "the finest linen garments" (Genesis 41:42)
