TISHA B'AV DVAR TORAH RAV BINYAMIN KAHANE

The Writings of Rav Binyamin Ze'ev Kahane HY"D- Tisha B'av Dvar Torah דבר תורה לתשעה באב
Something Has Happened Since Napoleon...
It is told of Napoleon, that upon passing a synagogue during the Ninth of Av, looked inside and saw Jews sitting on the floor and weeping. When he inquired further he was told the Jews were mourning over the destruction of their Holy Temple. “How long ago did this occur?”, he asked. “About 1,500 years ago”. “In that case”, said Napoleon, “there is no doubt that their Temple will be rebuilt. A people capable of crying for so long over its destroyed Temple and Land will eventually find its way home.”
While the Jewish People remained in the Exile, this was a nice story. Without a doubt, its optimistic message encouraged our people during times of severe hardships. Napoleon was keen enough to realize that a people who relives its past will succeed in conquering its future. Indeed, our sages have already stated that, “He who mourns for Jerusalem will merit to share in her joy”. (Tractate Taanit, 30)
However there exists one little problem. All this mourning was appropriate when we were forced into the Exile, being held at the mercy of the gentile nations and thus unable to forge our national destiny. In such a case, it was fitting to mourn “whole-heartedly” over our destroyed Temple and land. And today? One need not to have a PH.D. In history to see how things have changed since the times of Napoleon. Then – the land of Israel lay desolate; today it is rebuilt. Then – Jews dreamt about coming to Israel; today Jews not only live in Israel, but they rule over it. Then – all we could do was cry...but today???
Is mourning the only imperative for today? Is it not a bit absurd to lament in the synagogue of the Exile, beseeching G-d for a speedy redemption, when all one need to do is pack one's bags and board and eastbound El Al? Is it enough to stand down by the “Wall” of the Temple Mount wailing over the destruction when it is in our hands to erect the fallen city, in our hands to purify the site from the foxes who degrade it, and yes, even in our hands to rebuild the Holy Temple! The historic opportunity to rebuild and renew burns in our hands, and instead we find 101 EXCUSES TO DISREGARD IT!!!???
Fellow Jews!!! Let us open our eyes and appreciate the wondrous miracles that Hashem has granted us – miracles we have not witnessed since the days of our exodus from Egypt!!! He who cried, and only cried in the days of Napoleon did right; his tears were sincere. But today, he who only cries and does not combine his tears with real action – his lamentations leave much to be desired. His entreaties go unheeded, for G-d urges us on as he did to the Jews before their crossing of the Red Sea: “Why do you cry to Me? Speak to the Children of Israel – that they go forward!” What are you crying for? GO FORWARD AND DETERMINE YOUR DESTINY!!!! ARISE AND ACT TO SANCTIFY HASHEM'S HOLY NAME!!!!!
Yes, something has happened since the day Napoleon walked into that shteeble on the Ninth of Av. Let us join those who are ready not only to cry, BUT ALSO TO DO!!!!!

Rav Binyamin Kahane This IS Judasim, And Stop Apologizing!

The Writings of Rav Binyamin Ze'ev Kahane HY”D- Parashat Devarimפרשת דברים
This Is Judaism, And Stop Apologizing!
By western standards, the book of “Devarim” would have to be defined as an ultra-nationalistic doctrine. Its concepts are the very opposite of liberal western concepts. Its laws are illegal by western standards. The book is based on conquest. Stressed over and over again is the uncompromising commandment to conquer the land of “Canaan” from the gentile nations who have lived there for thousands of years, and to change the name to “Eretz Yisrael”.
If this isn't enough, we are even commanded to disinherit (to expel), and if necessary to annihilate the inhabitants of the land. This is an inseparable component of the positive commandment of “settling the land”.
The Book of “Devarim” also centers around the choseness of the Jewish Nation. The concept appears most prominently in Parashat Vaetchanan (7: 6-8), in Parashat Eikev (10:15), Parashat Re'eh (14:1-2) and almost all other parshiot of the book. This “ultra-nationalism” continues right on through to the book of Joshua and beyond.
Judaism is not a Supermarket!
We want to now delve into the “morality” of all this. We do not do so in order to make the Torah more palatable for all the non-believers and Hellenists around who simply reject the book of “Devarim” as they do the rest of the Torah, considering it primitive and racist. Rather we direct our words to G-d fearing Jews who understand that the Jewish Nation is dependent on the Torah, want to fulfill it, and ask all the same: These are the enlightened traditional Jewish ethics and values that everyone speaks about? This is the Jewish morality we so often hear about: Conquering, expelling, chosen people?
The answer is yes. What can one do when the “traditional Jewish values” that so many Jews speak of simply do not exist! Do not exist? There is no such thing as traditional Jewish ethics and values? Of course there is! But they are something entirely different. At the core of Jewish ethics and morality setting in apart from the ethics of mortal man is the concept of the acceptance of the yoke of heaven. That is, we DO NOT pick and choose the “merchandise”. First and foremost, we accept upon ourselves the values of Hashem WITHOUT ASKING QUESTIONS. Only then do we “check the goods”. While it is true that in the world of business one does not buy until he examines the product, the mitzvot and concepts of Hashem are not a business negotiation. They must be accepted unconditionally. Thus it is written, “It is better than all other goods” - for it is a product that one does not “check” before “buying”.
Book of National Policy
The Book of “Devarim” is the national policy guideline for the Jewish Nation. It is the morality that G-d conveys to us on subjects connected to Israeli nationalism. If someone wants to call it “ultra-nationalism”, so be it, for it is true Jewish ethics. It is not a system of values that is subject to change according to the whims of one generation or another as another passing fad, but rather it is an eternal morality that we, our fathers and our forefathers clinged to for thousands of years. This value system withstood all the passing tides of the past thousands of years, while modern western culture which evolved during the last one hundred (100) years will melt away as did its “enlightened” predecessors: Greek, Rome, Assyria, Babylon, east and west, of one generation or another...
No Guilt!
Precisely today when the sabotaging of all Jewish concepts are intensifying; at a time when the so-called “national” camp is non-existent, it is an obligation to read the parshiot in the Book of “Devarim”, and in particular “Ekev”, to strengthen our “emunah” in these authentic Jewish concepts. We must do so in order that we, the spiritual right side of the spectrum, can speak our piece clearly, unequivocally, and without guilt: The Almighty is stronger than all the nations, and if we believe in Him and fulfill His difficult “immoral” mitzvot, so to speak, we shall overcome our enemies (both political and cultural), and re-establish the Torah Republic that we have dreamed of for 2,000 years!

VIEWPOINT – Lessons to be learned
(EXCERPTS)

[Change Iraq to Iran]

The Rabbis tell us that Gog will rise up against Israel in order to do war against the G-d of Israel.  The ultimate Hillul Hashem.  And, indeed, until the Jew understands that the war against Ishmael and ultimately the world, is a war of Judaism, of the G-d of Israel, against the nations and their religions and beliefs, a war to proclaim the G-d of Israel as King, as the One and only G-d, we will never understand any of the events that are taking place around us.

We do, indeed, not understand.  Worse, we do not want to understand.  Having been conquered and subjugated by the gentilized Foreign Culture, such talk sounds to us as “medieval” and “primitive” and “tribalistic” and, of course, “Khoumeinism.”  Alas, the Ishmaelites, the Muslims understand it only too well and Saddam, whether through belief or cynical politics, used it and proclaimed it in his proclamation calling for a holy war:

“To all Arabs and Muslims masses wherever they are – save Mecca and the Tomb of the Prophet from occupation . . .

“The imperialists, deviators, merchants, political agents, the servants of the foreigner and Zionism all stood up against Iraq only because it represents the conscience of the Arab nation and its ability to safeguard its honor and rights against any harm.

“Iraq, O Arabs, is your Iraq... It is the candle of the right to snuff out darkness…

“O Arabs, O Muslims and believers everywhere.  This is your day to rise and defend Mecca, which is captured by the spears of the Americans and Zionists.

“Strike at their interests everywhere.  Save Mecca and the Tomb of Prophet Mohammed in Medina…

“Victory is ours, God willing, and the invaders will be repelled and with them oppression and corruption everywhere and the sun will shine forever on the Arab and Muslim nations…”

This is what Gog is all about,  This is the beginning of the final era and the lessons of the events of our time can be summed up in one general cry: “Return unto Me, saith the L-rd of Hosts, and I will return unto you” (Zechariah 1); “Return unto Me, ye backsliding children, I will heal your backslidings.”  That is the lesson of lessons, and from it all the others, the individual lessons are to be learned.
The events surrounding the Iraqi attack and conquest of Kuwait are things to be studied, learned, to be engraved on the tablet of our hearts.  For there are so many lessons to be learned here, so many lessons that the Almighty pleads with us to learned before terrible tragedy strikes.

ONE:  The Arab world is populated with people who are filled with hate and cruelty, ambition for power and lust for ascendancy.  They are people for whom truth, a promise and pledge are totally meaningless things, without the slightest moral or ethical value, meant to be used as weapons and means to achieve whatever goal strikes the fancy at that time.  The fact is that whatever the Iraqis said and did was part of one huge tissue of lies.  The original charges were lies.  The cover of meeting with the Kuwaitis to ostensibly work toward a settlement was a lie.  The claim that they were called in by Kuwaitis rebelling against the government was a lie.  The greatest truth of the Middle East is that Arabs simply lie.

Of course, it is not only Iraq.  Every time (and that means many times) slaughter breaks out in Lebanon, there is a call for a truce.  Any particular outbreak of violence is certain to give birth to at least a dozen “truces” each one broken whenever any side feels that it has an opportunity to benefit from the breach.  A promise, a word, a treaty, in the Arab world is a weapon in the game of acquisition, and the person who takes an Arab’s word seriously deserves his punishment if not for no other reason than that he is a fool.

The lesson?  We would be worse than foolish to trust the Palestinians.  We would be murderers of our loved ones.  Saddam Hussein is not a person – he is a concept.  Every Arab ruler is a Saddam Hussein, and given the opportunity, they behave like him.  Answar Saddat who attacked across the Suez Canal on Yom Kippur was a Saddam.  And we, who gave away a huge land mass and moved the border to within 60 mils of Tel Aviv, are mad.  And Hussein Mubarak is a Saddam and when he feels that his opportunity is ripe, will strike at Israel.  And Hussein, of Jordan, the little king, in 1967 smelled that opportunity for himself and attacked Israel.

There is not truth, no honesty, no word, no loyalty among the Arabs.  Yesterday’s enemy is today’s “friend,” and Jordan can massacre the PLO and then a PLO terrorist can assassinate a Jordanian minister and drink his blood, and tomorrow they can be “allies.”  Yesterday, Syria tried to do to Jordan what Iraq did to Kuwait; today they are “brothers.”  There is a diseased soul in the Arab world.

TWO:  To everyone who has told me (and I cannot begin to count the ways), that the reason we cannot expel the Arabs is that the world will not accept it:  Why is it that Saddam Hussein was not worried about “the world?”  Why is it that the Iranians are not worried about “the world?”  Why is it that the Esaus of the world never worry about what all the other Esaus might say and do?  Why is that only Jacob sits about all day watching tragedy grow and an awesome and terrible future come closer and refuses to act normal because of “the world” and what it might do and say?  Why is it that Saddam is prepared to do a terrible thing and not fear “the world” and Jews are not ready to do a mitzvah that will save them, i.e. throwing out the Arabs, because of “the world?”  Learn the lesson.

THREE: The real and natural reaction in the Arab world was one of awe and respect for a man who wasted no time in diplomatic niceties but used power and strength.  And here is the key to the Arab and Middle Eastern mind – strength and power is what impresses, not goodness and morality.  When Israel was perceived by the Arabs to be strong and tough, they hated her but feared her and cowered in terror.  Each time that Israel, consistent with her Hellenistic-influence, grants insane concessions, it is not perceived by the Arabs as “goodness” but as weakness, and the weak in the Middle Eastern jungle are ripe for the slaughter.  Learn the lesson.

FOUR:  The Iraqi dictator has become a hero to the Palestinians who see in his actions the only way to deal with Israel.  They dream that his moves, in defiance of the world, will be adopted by other Arab states against Israel.  That is why the PLO supports him.  He has brutally taken over another Muslim Arab state – does that matter? Not in the slightest in the jungle of beasts and wild animals that comprises the Arab world.  Learn the lesson.

FIVE:  From this lesson comes forth another lesson.  The Iraqi move will embolden the Israeli Arabs inside the Jewish state to intensify their attacks on her.  The so-called intifada will grow and expand inside Israel and give Iraq greater reason to intensify its own threats against Israel’s existence until the madman who typifies so much that is the Arab megalomaniac mind may be driven by dreams to launch his missiles and chemicals against the Jewish state.  Already on behalf of Saddam, a man threatened to incinerate Israel.  The Arabs of Israel are possessed by a hatred of the Jewish state that transcends their fear of being incinerated along with the Jews.  And we allow them to remain and grow and become a fifth column cancer within our midst.  Madness!  Learn the lesson that cries out two things:

a)     Remove the Israeli Arabs now, before it is too late.
b)      Strike at Iraq  [Iran 2017] now, before that, too, is too late.  And that is the next lesson:

SIX:  It is only a matter of time before Saddam, drunk with adulation of his people and the Arab world, and seeing himself as one of the great Arab heroes of history, takes upon himself to do that which the Arab world has dreamed of doing for 42 years – wiping out Israel.

Every day that passes sees Saddam’s nuclear and chemical power and potential grow.  Israel’s interests are not those of the United States.  America seeks to protect the oil fields and the “moderate” Arab state.  Our concern is not that; ours is knowledge that even if Saddam should capitulate to all American demands and retreat from Kuwait, he remains to continue his progress to nuclear weapons, even more awesome chemical and biological ones, and the ever-more sophisticated means of delivering them.

The U.S. wishes Israel to stay out of the fray.  It wants Israel neither to be seen nor heard, lest that harm U.S. interests in the Arab world It certainly does not want Israel to bomb Iraq, despite the fact that Iraq’s main and hallowed target is Israel.  The nuclear bombs of Iraq are not aimed and never will be aimed at Washington.  They will be at Israel.

Israel’s interest are not those of the United States, and we should do only what is best for us.  One can feel for American hostages, and in great measure they are there now because George Bush waited and allowed the Iraqis time to round them up and place them as hostages inside the sensitive Iraqi targets.  But all that is ultimately irrelevant.  Just as the U.S. did nothing for Israeli hostages and really could not have cared less, so must Israel disregard American interests when its survival is at stake.

Every day Saddam moves closer to perfecting weapons of awesome mass destruction.  Now, now, now, before he can wipe out, G-d forbid, hundreds of thousands of our people, is the time to strike and level his potential – factories, installations, missiles.  Now, now, now while the world – which we so fear – is itself in a mood of anger and fear of Iraq.  Strike; destroy the man and people who both have the halachic status of a “rodef,” of one who wishes to kill Jews.

Israel should never be bound by any made, murderous, perverted ethics and immoral morality of the disturbed liberal-left axis.  Never should to ever pledge not to strike a first blow.  If the need arises or if Israel even perceives the need arising, it must strike first.  And never should Israel ever fall into the trap of banning any kind of weapon.  There is nothing in any way less “moral” about a huge weapon of destruction than a small one.  Any weapon that is used to kill people in an immoral war is bad.  Any weapon used to kill vicious enemies in a war of survival is a mitzvah.

Israel should make no bones about, and should not be shy in any way about telling the world that it plans to have one of the world’s most potent and efficient arsenals of what is stupidly called “unconventional weapons” “conventional” forces far outnumber Israel’s and who are working feverishly to obtain nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and the missiles to deliver them.  Israel should have every possible weapon of mass destruction imaginable and deal with the question, “but will that not give the Arabs an excuse to do the same,” with the nausea it deserves.

It is best that no one bomb.  But it is better, far, far better, to bomb than to be bombed.  It is better to gas than to be gassed.  And when dealing with Saddams and Arabs – that is the only language they will ever understand.  Learn the lesson.

SEVEN: The last and most important lesson, without which all the others will avail us nothing.  Return unto G-d, quickly, now, now, now.  We and all that is ours are in His hands.  The Saddams of this world are nothing before Him, and yet, everything, if G-d hides His face from us.  Of course, we must strike Saddam, but the hawks of this world who devour shrimps are too small to help the Jewish people.  They understand nothing that is Jewish.  And yet, the lesson is so clear, the lesson of G-d and history.

Two things are the call of the hour:  Return to the L-rd, G-d of Israel.  And wipe out Iraq’s power.  Now.

An Interview with Rabbi Meir Kahane,
Kahane Magazine,  April 1978, p.22
There is a truth, a Jewish truth that no one speaks today.  The Jewish Idea has been corrupted and silenced.  There must be one person who is prepared to speak the entire truth in the truthful way.  No one else speaks about the holocaust that must grip the Galut; no one else speaks about the need to remove the Arabs from Eretz Yisroel; no one else says that to depend on the Americans will not bring salvation but rather Divine punishment; no one else ways that if the government of Israel will not annex the lands, Divine Punishment will again strike us; no one else says that we must defy the government if it defies Jewish law; no one else speaks as a Jew, and with the Jewish Idea.  That is my obligation.  If I have support and if I have followers, well and good.  If I am able to build an organization, so much the better.  But if I have to be alone and shout out the lonely truth in that way – that will be my role.

“On A Hill Near Shchem,”
Jewish Press, October 13, 1978
Conversation between Rabbi Kahane and the soldiers of Israel

“Why do you have to give us such a hard time?” asked one soldier.  “I am not the only one who gives you a hard time,” I replied, “you are the ones who are
breaking the law.  The law says that a Jew must live in Eretz Yisroel and settle everywhere, and you prevent it.”  “The only law that we have is the government, and you are violating it.  Besides, we want peace and you are destroying the chances for peace.”    “And you really believe that by giving up Sinai and giving the Arabs Judea and Samaria, you will have peace?  Don’t you remember how they went to war when they had the Sinai and Judea-Samaria?”  The soldiers had now gathered around me and one said:  “But things are different today!”  “How do you know?” I shot back, “Why do you risk the state by trusting an enemy that started four wars?”  “We have to gamble!  It is impossible to keep on fighting.  I am willing to take the risk.”  It was clear that this was the view of most of the soldiers, almost all of whom were irreligious.

“I’ll tell you,” I said.  “If you really want to gamble, trust me – not the Arabs.  I tell you that if you will all put on tefillin for a month, the Messiah will come.  And if you gamble on tefillin and the Messiah does not come, what have you lost?”

. . .  Tomorrow would be Friday, Begin was coming home.  At the airport he would be greeted by thousands of cheering Israelis and he would cry out to them: “I have brought you peace!”  Voices.  Voices. Voices. From yet another airport; from yet another Prime Minister; to yet another cheering crowd.  “I have brought you peace in our time . . .” It was Chamberlain coming home from Munich.  The bus started up and the settlement had come to an end.  This time there was no singing.

“The Second Revolution,”
Jewish Press, October 20, 1978
While no other Prime Minister used the name of G-d, Begin mouths it and then gives away Jewish rights because Jimmy Carter, in his eyes, is more real.  Fear of being isolate?  Trembling at the fact that no newspapers supported Israel?  Worry over the loss of allies? The redemption of the Jewish people will come with the greatest grandeur precisely when Israel is isolated!   And these are the words of the Prophet Isaiah as he envisioned the final redemption, words we read in the synagogue on the week before Rosh Hashanah; words that were mouthed without listening to them or understanding them.  The Prophet speaks of the anger and vengeance of G-d against Israel’s enemies:

“I have trodden in the winepress ALONE, and of the nations THERE WAS NONE WITH ME. . . For the day of vengeance is in My heart, and the year of My redemption is come.  And I looked and there was none to help . . .  therefore has My own arm brought salvation . . .” (Isaiah 63:3-5)

Not through Jimmy Carter are we saved, and not through allies and gentile salvation.  Begin, who gave into pressure, is no better than all the others whom he so bitterly criticized when he was in opposition.  Fear of the gentile has taken precedence over the awe of G-d.  That is the heart of the problem. That is why Begin brought home, not peace, but war.  For peace will only come when He who creates and grants peace will agree.  That agreement can never come in response to violation of Torah and to Hillul Hashem.

Perhaps a final note.  All that I have written would have been bad enough.  But there might have been some mitigation had Begin, at least stood before the people gravely, sadly, in sorrow and said:  “This is a black day for us.  But we had no choice.”  I would have differed with him then, too, and been angry.  But at least we would have been spared the sight of a huge and happy welcome at the airport – so strikingly similar to the return of Chamberlain.  At least, Begin might not have pretended that he had brought us good tidings and peace. At least, he would have been honest.

The above articles appeared in 1978 quotes, volume 3.
